Guide to HPPD: How to Overcome or Reverse the Effects

Researchers do not fully understand how these conditions relate to HPPD, but many report that they experience them alongside visual disturbances. Currently, no cure for HPPD is effective in the treatment of all individuals who are struggling with the disorder. Medications have been identified as effective in helping some people manage pseudo flashbacks caused by HPPD.

What is hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder?

However, more research is needed to understand exactly how hallucinogens work. Research shows that if you live with depression (with or without anxiety), HPPD symptoms may last longer for you and treatment may not work as well. Researchers are looking into whether brain stimulation may work as a way to relieve HPPD symptoms, but studies are still ongoing.

Other Symptoms Not Reported by DSM V

Visual aberrations can occur periodically in healthy individuals – e.g., afterimages after staring at a light, noticing floaters inside the eye, blue field entoptic phenomenon or seeing specks of light in a darkened room. However, in people with HPPD, symptoms seem typically to be worse, but complication comes from the additional roles played by anxiety and fixation. Indeed, anxiety has been implicated in visual perceptual effects similar to HPPD,17 and authors have recognized the crucial role of attending to underlying anxiety and panic in recovering from the disorder. However, visual disturbances defined as HPPD also occur in people who have never used psychedelics or other drugs, especially those with anxiety disorders. HPPD symptoms can also manifest months or years after psychedelic use, throwing into question the causal link between the drug and the visual disturbances.

How Can People With HPPD Disorder and Their Families Cope With the Condition?

Therapy, especially cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), can help patients reduce the anxiety that can make HPPD symptoms worse, redirect their attention, and improve their mood. During a year-long trial of lamotrigine, with a maximum dose of 200 mg, the patient experienced significant relief from her symptoms, some of which disappeared completely. Only the depersonalization and derealization proved somewhat refractory. It is important to note that the patient showed a marked improvement during the 200 mg dosing-in phase itself and remained stable even after the dose was reduced to 100 mg daily.

Signs of Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD)

  • Therapy can help people with the disorder learn to manage stress and develop coping strategies for dealing with HPPD vision symptoms.
  • However, the clinical relevance of the long-term psychological sequelae which include so-called flashbacks remains unclear Hermle et al. 1992; Hermle et al. 2008.
  • This latent period could range anywhere from minutes to years1118.
  • Despite that, HPPD can still cause significant distress and interfere with one’s work and social life.
  • When abused, it causes hallucinations and disconnection from reality.

Furthermore, lamotrigine is generally well tolerated with a relative lack of adverse hppd symptoms effects, making it a drug of choice for youths and young adults. HPPD is most commonly seen after the use of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). HPPD however has also been reported after cannabis, 3,4- methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA/“ecstasy”), and other novel psychoactive substances (NPS)456789.

What flashbacks feel like

The doctor may perform an examination, obtain laboratory tests, and take an image of your brain. In some cases, people experience HPPD after their very first use of a drug. Other people use these drugs for many years before experiencing symptoms. Read on to learn more about this phenomenon, why it happens, and how a person might experience it. However, taking certain medications can worsen symptoms in some people.

  • In Type 2, the experience is more disturbing and persistent, and an individual may experience consistent changes in vision.
  • In this context, the rarely ever documented occurrence of flashbacks in controlled studies of hallucinogen action should be mentioned.
  • It is not uncommon for depersonalization-derealization to be the most distressing symptom of the condition.

HPPD can occur after the use of recreational hallucinogenic drugs. Most people experience HPPD symptoms as a flashback (a past incidence that recurs vividly in the mind) or a benign re-experiencing of the initial drug-induced experience. Studies show LSD (also called acid) is the amphetamine addiction treatment most common hallucinogenic drug that can cause HPPD. LSD is a lab-made chemical that is in a class of drugs called psychedelics.
