What happened to this series? I still remember when there was a reason Jennifer Lawrence wielded a bow. When everyone just worried about not dying. Now it has taken a direction that bites off more than it can chew, in an attempt to bring some significance to an otherwise one dimensional story.
The writers want you to think that events which unfold in part 1 and 2 of Mockingjay were planned since the beginning. However, it is very clear (due to the sloppy writing) that they struggled to tie everything together. Explosion here, plot twist there. What is the result? DOESN’T MATTER — because their version of storytelling is simply not explaining (or showing) the consequences of each event, and instead jumping forward in time from the moment Jennifer Lawerence is almost killed, to the moment she wakes up in her hospital bed. How convenient. Oh, and that happens more than once…
Here’s what they should have done. Kept the series simple. It’s about survival. That’s all it was ever about. The best parts of the movie are the tense moments where Jennifer (and crew) have to fight against the odds to survive. About 1/3 of this movie is just that, and you know what? It’s enjoyable. In fact, there was a great scene where they are in the sewers just knowing something bad will happen, but unsure of when. The suspense is thrilling, and the end result is gruesome.
But it all ties back into the main plot which simply doesn’t work. The ending is nearly unbelievable in how predictable it is. The foreshadowing is overbearing and you can only hope that they DON’T go in that direction because of how silly it would be. But no, they go there…
Also, the last 10 minutes was the cringiest piece of cinema I’ve seen in a long time.

I read this and completely forgot that this movie existed. My first thought was that it was a review of the new Divergent series movie.
I have read all the Hunger Games books and really wasn’t very happy with the ending. It was also cringe-worthy. So maybe it’s just the way the story is meant to end.
Gruesome is a strong term, let’s remember this series was made for the under 18 crowd.
I watched every one of these movies in the theatre, only because once I started I felt obligated to continue.
However, the redeeming part of this movie was the sewer scene. And that Hemsworth guy.
I also agree with Joel, the last 10 minutes are awful…even the final pages of the book were awful so not sure it was all JLaw’s fault.
I agree, I found this slow start of a movie very disappointing.
