007: Spectre

Being a big Bond fan I had to go to the theatre to see this movie. But after the credits rolled I found myself overly disappointed.

I like that Daniel Craig’s take on Bond has a more serious tone than its predecessors, and I also appreciate that the writers crafted a cohesive story which tied all the Bond movies in the Daniel Craig universe together. While Spectre achieved that, there was little to no pay off in the end.

I feel like this movie was just your typical cut and paste action flick. Apart from a couple scenes, nothing stands out — it’s completely unmemorable. Also, it’s THREE hours long. That’s way too much.

This was the last Bond that Daniel Craig was contracted to do, so whether or not he’ll be back for the next one, no one knows. If this was his last one, I suppose it would be fitting considering how it ended. But Casino Royale was (in my opinion) the best Bond movie of all time, why couldn’t Craig deliver something better? There was so much more potential there.

  1. Michael Grant says:

Joel has terrible taste in movies. This is a well documented fact. Just ask him about Interstellar.

The new Bond film is a solid addition to the Daniel Craig era. The movie is long but it moves along nicely. The plot tries to tie in threads from the previous movies, which is a nice touch but it sometimes is a stretch.

Like other Bond movies, the film is some times guilty of style over substance and many scenes require a health suspension of disbelief. But, it’s a Bond movie – what are you really looking for? It’s action packed and Bond looks pretty darn cool while doing it.

The biggest over sight in Joel’s review is that he failed to properly acknowledge the extensive use of really great suits in the movie. On haberdashery alone, this movie gets a passing grade.

Is it the best Bond movie of the Daniel Craig quadrilogy? No. But it is a solid action movie with style and more than a few laughs. So head to your local movie house, order a big tray of nachos (with that gelatinous orange substance they call cheese) and enjoy three hours in a world filled with pretty people and witty one-liners.
